  • In 1861 James Edward Hanger becomes the first American Civil War amputee and invents a prosthetic leg for himself. Soon he starts manufacturing theses “Hanger Limbs” to other amputee soldiers.

  • In 1871 the Hanger Limb receives a patent when the Association for the Relief of Maimed Soldiers receives public funding for United States wounded soldiers.

  • The company is soon named J.E. Hanger Company.

  • By 1890 the company has expanded to Philadelphia, St. Louis, Atlanta, Baltimore and Pittsburgh. J.E. Hanger Company is incorporated in 1906.

  • In the 1950 the company forms a subsidiary, Metal Limb Manufacturers, and it replaces wood and leather with ultra-light, strong magnesium. During these years the company adds orthotic services to its portfolio.

  • By the late 1980’s the company has several businesses and Hanger Orthopedic Group is created.

  • It has its initial public offering in 1991 and starts trading on the American Stock Exchange. During the next couple of years, the company buys almost 100 companies.
